Other Vegetable Oils

TREATMENT OF TARIFFS:

Upon enactment of the NAFTA on January 1, 1994, the United States immediately eliminated duties on many oils, including peanut, olive, linseed, corn, sesame, jojoba, and castor. There is no U.S. duty on palm, coconut, palm kernel, rapeseed, or tung oil. For sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oil, the U.S. duty was eliminated on January 1, 1998.
Mexico's initial duties on vegetable oils were 10 or 20 percent, depending on the oil, and most are being phased out over 10 years. Duties on peanut, virgin olive, tung, sesame, jojoba, and castor oil were eliminated immediately.

TREATMENT OF QUANTITATIVE RESTRICTIONS:

There are no quantitative restrictions affecting trade in vegetable oils.

RULES OF ORIGIN:

Refining of crude oils does not confer origin for any vegetable oil, including soybean, corn, sunflower, safflower, cottonseed, peanut, rapeseed, linseed, tung, sesame, and tropical oils.
